Miami Green Lab Encourages Miami Building Automation Design

Congratulations to the City of Miami on its opening of the Miami Green Lab on Thursday. This former firehouse in West Little Havana has been transformed into the Miami Green Lab, a training center for local professionals seeking green certification and green resources. The building offers functional rooms that support the resource building’s initiatives, such as a gallery or community room for seminars and products, a 20 station computer lab, and home to the City’s Office of Sustainable Initiatives. The building at 151 N.W. 27th Avenue will also house a Neighborhood Enhancement Team office, which residents can visit for basic city services.
The redevelopment of the firehouse cost about $1.25 million. Funding came from federal stimulus dollars geared toward green initiatives and the U.S. Department of Energy and a grand from the Home Depot Foundation. Some of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design enhancements incorporated into the building’s design include using solar panels to heat water, installing special lights that use less energy, overhauling the air conditioning system to improve efficiencies and installing landscaping that requires little to no water. The building also has a collection system for rainwater that is reused.
Advanced Control Corporation, a leader in South Florida’s building automation is thrilled to see the city providing a place that will help harness the skills of environmental professionals locally and help expand the impact of sustainable design in areas like development and construction. This demonstration site and resource center is a great educational resource center for green building programs. Miami Dade College will be working with the lab to implement its training programs. Already, the facility has hosted more than a dozen architects seeking part of the training they need for their green certification.
