Why Become LEED Certified?

In the last few blogs we have been discussing LEED certification – what is it and how does the certification process work. Today, after a little overview we will look at the why.  What good does LEED certification provide for the environment and the building? Why go through all this?

Being LEED certified provides independent, third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Certification occurs through the Green Building Certification Institute, an independent non-profit that was established in 2008 with the support of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). GBCI includes a network of ISO-compliant international certifying bodies, ensuring the consistency, capacity and integrity of the LEED certification process. Advanced Control Corporation is a participating member of the USGBC.

Participation in LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings’ performance. There are both environmental and financial benefits to earning LEED certification.

LEED-certified buildings are designed to help the environment by reducing waste sent to landfills and to conserve energy and water. Most people do not realize that building emit greenhouse gas emissions these building reduce those emissions.  LEED-certified buildings provide the building owner with lower operating costs and increase the building’s asset value.  These buildings provide a healthier and safer environment for occupants.   LEED-certified buildings qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives in hundreds of cities.

An organization’s participation in the voluntary and technically rigorous LEED process demonstrates leadership, innovation, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
