LEED certification has been in the news lately with ballparks and banks being certified but do you understand what LEED certification means? We are going to take a few blogs to explain what all the fuss is about and why it is so important to all of us.
LEED is an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) in 2000, LEED is an internationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
LEED has special rating systems that apply to all kinds of structures, including schools, retail and healthcare facilities. Rating systems are available for new construction and major renovations as well as existing buildings. The program is designed to inform and guide all kinds of professionals who work with structures to create or convert spaces to environmental sustainability, including architects, real estate professionals, facility managers, engineers, interior designers, landscape architects, construction managers, private sector executives and government officials. The rating systems are developed through an open, consensus-based process led by LEED committees. The next update of the LEED rating system is just getting started with ballots being released to members this month.
LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
As a member of USGBC, Advanced Control Corporation is eligible to participate in the development of the LEED rating systems and continues to demonstrate its leadership in the area of protecting our environment through energy conservation. Advanced Control Corporation has become standard over the past twenty years in South Florida and is at the forefront of the emerging technologies and methods. We participated in the Broward Community College South Regional Library project which was the first LEED certified building in Broward County. Advanced Control Corporation installed the Building Automation/Energy Management System which controls and monitors all of the air handling units, variable air volume boxes, indoor air quality (CO2), indoor relative humidity, exhaust air system, and the chilled water system in the building.
