Kohl’s Department Stores has reached a major milestone both as a company and in the retail industry. Kohl’s has become the first U.S. company to earn Gold pre-certification using the LEED for Retail: New Construction rating system. The department store chain also announced that it is targeting a total of 500 LEED-certified stores by 2015.
Launched in November 2010, the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Volume Program saw its first high achiever with Kohl’s Corporation. Beginning in the spring, all new Kohl’s stores will be designed and constructed with the pre-certified prototype, replacing the company’s current Silver prototype for new stores, which the company has used since fall 2008. Over 90 new stores have been built to the design and 20 more are slated to receive LEED Silver certification in the coming months. As part of a series of sustainable initiatives, Kohl’s existing store prototype was pre-certified at the Gold level earlier this year, and over 60 stores have received LEED designations under the Existing Building program. Sustainable features included:
- Regional and recycled building materials
- Energy efficient building design
- Building automation systems
- Water efficient plumbing & irrigation
- Improved indoor air quality
- Green cleaning practices
- Operational recycling
- Environmental education program
In addition to the company’s latest environmental endeavors, Kohl’s also boasts over 100 solar locations in California, Connecticut, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Maryland, Oregon, Colorado and Pennsylvania. Kohl’s latest efforts to green their operations is a significant sign that eco-consciousness is spreading throughout the business world.
